Enjoying Fall on a Budget - Virtually Free Autumn Activities for Families
With the leaves changing and that crisp autumn air rolling in, fall always feels like an invitation to slow down and soak up the little moments. This year, I've been searching for ways to enjoy the season with my kids without breaking the bank, and the good news is there’s plenty of family fun that doesn’t cost much—or anything at all! Plus, thanks to the Fourth Grade Free Annual Pass, we have access to many state parks for free this year, opening even more options. Here are some of the ways we’re making the most of this season on a budget.
Nature Scavenger Hunts
We love heading out to local parks
or trails with a simple list of nature treasures to find—think red and yellow
leaves, acorns, pinecones, and mushrooms. My kids love the challenge, and I enjoy
walking (and taking all the cute pictures)! A little exploration keeps them
engaged and lets us all unwind together.
DIY Leaf Art
There’s something magical about
fall leaves, especially with all the colors they come in. We bring a bag on our
walks and collect a few unique ones to take home for art projects. Simple
things like leaf rubbing with crayons and paper or creating leaf collages give
them a chance to be creative and it’s a great use for all those extra crayons
and art supplies at home.
Visiting a Local Farm or Orchard
Sometimes, just visiting a nearby
farm is enough to feel like a big adventure. Many farms offer free admission to
look around, and even if we skip the apple-picking, the scenery alone is worth
it. These spots make for a beautiful day out, and my kids love watching the
farm animals or exploring pumpkin patches.
Cozy Storytime at Home
Fall is the season for cozy
evenings, so we pile up some blankets, pick a few fall-themed books (the
library’s free e-books have been a lifesaver), and settle in for Storytime.
Nothing says fall like a warm drink and a good story together after a long day.
Backyard Campfire or Picnic
On weekends, we try to bring a
little adventure to the backyard! If you can set up a small fire safely,
telling stories or singing together around it is so much fun. If you're like me
and don’t have a backyard, a park picnic can be just as magical. Simple,
homemade snacks and hot chocolate or apple cider in a dollar store thermos to
bring fall flavors to life.
Exploring State Parks
One of my favorite things this
year has been using the Fourth-grade free pass, which lets us visit many state
parks without paying an entrance fee. Hiking in the fall is my favorite. It’s
not too hot or too cold plus it lets us see all those stunning fall colors and
is perfect for photos and making memories. We’re making the most of it by
exploring new trails and soaking in the beauty of fall.
Fall Baking Days
There’s nothing like baking on a cool autumn day, and fall flavors are a must. We don’t need a lot of fancy ingredients to make treats like apple muffins or pumpkin bread together (here is my favorite pumpkin bread recipe: pumpkin bread ) Plus, it’s a chance to get the kids involved and let them be a part of the magic. The smell alone fills the house with that perfect autumn vibe!
Local Fall Festivals at Churches,
Libraries, and Recreation Centers
Many communities host free or low-cost fall festivals throughout the season, and they’re perfect for making family memories. Churches, libraries, and recreation centers often put on events that include everything from pumpkin painting and hayrides to costume contests and craft booths. These events usually have a welcoming, family-friendly vibe, and they're often free to attend! You can find details about local festivals by checking community boards, Facebook event sections, and library websites. We’ve made it a tradition to attend at least one festival each fall—it’s a simple way to enjoy some seasonal fun without spending much.
Fall has always been a season of
little moments, and this year we’re making the most of it in simple ways. From
exploring state parks to cozy nights with books, there’s so much to enjoy
together without spending a lot. So, here’s to making the season magical, one
free (or nearly free) adventure at a time!
